1.a) Write down the expression for the instantaneous power, and hence derive the equation for the average power.
 b) A series R-L-C circuit consists of 100 ohms resistor and an inductor of 0.318 Henry and a capacitor of unknown value. This circuit is supplied by 230V, 50 HZ supply and draws a current of 2.3 ohms, and the current is in phase with the supply voltage. Find i) the value of the capacitance, and the power supplied by the source. [8+8]

2.a) Derive the equation for the voltage generated in a d.c generator.
b) A 2 pole d.c generator has 200 conductors on its armature. It is driven by a prime mover at a constant speed of 600 r.p.m. If the flux per pole is 0.1 wb, calculate the emf generated. [8+8]

3. With a neat sketch explain in detail moving coil attraction type instrument. [16]

b) An amplifier has a gain of 10,000 without feedback. The gain is reduced to 50 with negative feedback. Find the feedback factor.

7.a) With the help of neat circuit diagram, explain the following applications of OP-AMP:
i) Multiplier ii) Differentiator iii) Subtractor.
b) Design a scaling adder circuit using OP-AMP, to give the output voltage

1 (a) State and explain Bazin’s formula for determining the constant C.
(b) For a flow in a rectangular channel of width 5 m and depth of flow 2.3 m, the Darcy-Weisbach
friction factor is estimated to be 0.02. Estimate the values of Chezy’s ‘C’ and Manning’s ‘n’.

2 Write short note on integration method of solving GVF equation.
A rectangular channel carries a discharge of 3 cumecs per m width. If the loss of energy in the hydraulic jump is found to be 3.2 m, determine the conjugate depths before and after the jump.

3 Explain in detail about Rayleigh’s method of dimensional analysis. What are the practical uses?

4 (a) Derive the expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on an inclined fixed plate in the
direction of the jet.
(b) A jet of water of diameter 100 mm moving with a velocity of 30 m/s strikes a curved fixed
symmetrical plate at the center. Find the force exerted by the jet of water in the direction of the jet, if the jet is deflected through an angle of 1200 at the outlet of the curved plate.

5 (a) Assuming the required data, design a pelton wheel to generate a power of 1.5 MW when working under a head of 150 m and a speed of 450 rpm.
(b) A Kaplan turbine develops 2150 KW under a head of 7.5 m with an overall efficiency of 88%. It is fitted with an elbow type draft tube having efficiency of 90%.The inlet of the draft tube is 1.8 m in diameter. Determine how much above or below the tail race level should the draft tube inlet be set so that the vacuum pressure there does not exceed 48 cm of mercury.

6 (a) What do you understand by specific speed of a turbine? What is its use?
(b) Define cavitation. What are the effects of cavitation? Give the necessary precautions against cavitation.

7 (a) What is the principle behind a centrifugal pump and derive an expression for the minimum starting speed of a centrifugal pump.
(b) The internal and external diameters of the impeller of a centrifugal pump are 20 cm and 40 cm
respectively. The pump is running at 1200 rpm. The vane angles of the impeller at inlet and outlet are 200 and 300 respectively. The water enters the impeller radially and velocity of flow is constant. Determine the work done by the impeller per kg. of water.

8 (a) Discuss critically, how you plan a power house.
(b) The designed capacity of a hydropower plant is 1.32 x 10^5 KW. If the power generated in the plant is 9 x 104 KW, find the efficiency of the plant. If the peak discharge is 1.5 times the normal
discharge, determine the plant capacity, plant factor and total energy produced in a year.

1. A room of 1728 cu.m. in volume is shown by a cube of 216 cu.cm. volume. Find R.T. construct a plain scale to measure up to 40 m. Mark on it a distance of 28 m.  [15]
2. Draw a hypo cycloid of a circle of 40 mm. diameter which rolls inside another circle of 160 mm diameter for one complete revolution. [15]
3. A pentagon of side 30 mm is resting on an edge in H.P, such that it makes an angle of 500 with V.P and its surface makes an angle of 300 with H.P. Draw the projections. [15]
4. The projectors of the ends of a line AB are 55 mm apart. The end ‘A’ is 35 mm above HP and 40 mm in front of V.P. The end ‘B’ is 15 mm below the H.P and 45 mm behind V.P. Determine true length and its inclinations with two planes. [15]
5. A square pyramid of 30 mm side and 60 mm height is resting on one of its triangular faces in H.P, such that the edge containing that face makes an angle of 300 with V.P. Draw the projections of the pyramid. [15]
6. A cone of 40 mm diameter axis 65 mm long is resting on its apex in H.P so that the axis makes an angle of 450  with H.P and top view of axis makes an angle of 300 with xy line. Draw the projections. [15]

1. Construct a diagonal scale of 1 . 2000 R F = to show meters and long enough to measure up to 300 m. Mark on it a distance of 257 m. [15]
2. A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls on a straight line without slipping. Draw the locus of a point on the circumference of the circle for one complete revolution. Draw tangent and normal to the curve 15 mm above the axis. [15]
3. A Rhombus of diagonals 120 mm & 80 mm is resting on one of its corners in H.P such that the longer diagonal is inclined at 300  to H.P and the shorter diagonal is parallel to both the planes. [15]
4. The top view of a 75 mm long line measures 60 mm, while its front view is 55 mm. Its one end A is 10 mm above H.P and 15 mm in front of V.P. Draw the projections of the line and determine its inclinations with H.P & V.P. [15]
