3. Briefly explain the following:

 b) Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) 6


4. a) With a neat sketch explain the construction and working of  scanning tunneling microscope. 6

 b) Briefly explain the study of crystal structure using TEM. 6


5. Briefly explain the following:

 a) Linear defects b) Interfacial defects c) Screw dislocation. 12


6. a) What is fracture and explain the different types of fractures with  suitable examples. 6

 b) Define the following terms in brief:

 i) Tensile strength ii) Hardness iii) Creep iv) Fatigue. 6


7. Explain briefly the following:

 a) Diffusion in metals and alloys 3

 b) Self-diffusion 3 

 c) Diffusion coefficients 3

 d) Kirkendall effect 3


8. Explain the concept of time scale of phase changes in nucleation  and growth and also state the applications of it. 12


9. Explain the terms in related to nano materials

 a) Physical vapour deposition 4

 b) Ball milling 4

 c) Lithography techniques 4


10. a) Explain the applications of nano materfials in different fields. 6

 b) State the current challenges and future trends of nanomaterials. 6
