1. (a) Explain the major functions performed by the data link layer and network layer of OSI reference model.

(b)Define modulation and describe the following with suitable diagrams:

1) Phase modulation

2) Frequency modulation

2. (a) What is a computer network? Discuss its various topologies and their respective suitability.

(b) Compare and contrast digital and analog data transmission.

3. (a) What is OSI Reference model? Why layered approach is followed in this model? Explain. Compare and contrast the delivery of data units in the transport layer, data link layer and network layer.

4. Explain the following:-

(a) TCP/IP Model

(b) IEEE Standard 802

5. (a) What are routing algorithms? Discuss their significance and suitability.

(b) What is internet? Discuss its applications and also outline the internet security measures.

6. (a) What are protocols? Illustrate sliding windows protocols.

(b) Discuss the role of the communication subnet in a computer network. Which layers of OSI model does it cover?
7. (a) What is multiplexing? Illustrate different types of multiplexing techniques possible for signals.

8. Differentiate between the following:-

(a) Fiber optical and coaxial cables

(b) Packet switching and circuit Switching.
