Part A

1. Describe the construction and applications of general purpose wirewound potentiometers.
2. Compare the VI characteristics of Si and Ge diodes.
3. Explain the working of a 2 diode full-wave rectifier.
4. Draw the necessary signals to find frequency modulation and modulated wave.
5. What is the importance of modulation index in deciding over modulation under modulation and 100% modulation ?
6. What are universal gates? discuss.
7. What is a strain gauge? discuss gauge factor.
8. Explain how hexadecimal and octal numbers are converted into binary and decimal form.
9. What is an operating system? provide examples.
10. Draw the block diagram of a mobile communication system and discuss.
(10 X four = 40 marks)

Part B

11. (a) define the various kinds of ceramic capacitors their characteristics and applications.
Or
(b) define the Carbon composition resistor, its colour coding and tolerance.

12. (a) discuss the working principle of a PNP transistor. Mention 3 important uses of a transistor.
Or
(b) discuss the terms (i) P type, N kind materials, Barrier potential and the cause for the development of this potential, depletion region.

13. (a) discuss bridge rectifier with capacitor filter. What is the expression for ripple factor for this circuit?
Or
(b) For a 2 diode full-wave rectifier derive the value of ripple factor.

14. (a) Draw the block diagram of AM transmitter and discuss. Also discuss the principle of AM generation.
Or
(b) Draw the simplified block diagram of a Monochrome TV receiver and discuss.

15. (a) discuss the principle of working of microphone and loudspeaker.
Or
(b) discuss compilers and assemblers.
