t . a) Two independenton-coherent sources of light cannot produce an interference
pattern. Explain.
b) What is a polarised light ? Explain how to distinguish unpolarised light from
circularly polarised light.
c) Briefly explain the principle behind ESR"
d) Explain a wave function.
e) Discuss the requisites of laser action.
f) Explain how light is guided through an optical fiber,
g) Briefly discuss the properties of superconductors.
h) Classify conductors, semiconductors and insulators on the basis of band
structure. (8x5=40)
a) i) What is a diffraction grating ? Obtain the expression of primary maxima
in a diffraction grating. 10
ii) A plane diffraction grating has the grating constant 15x10-4 cm. Calcualte
the position of 3'd order maxima for I = 2.4x10-4 cm. 5

b) i) Obtain the expression for colours of thin films in a reflected system. 10

b) i) What is non-destructive testing ? Explain with principle and sketch a non
destructive method of testing a sample using ultrasonics"
ii) The ultrasonic pulse echo method is employed to detect possible defects in a
steel bar of thickness 40 cm. lf the pulse interval times are 30 and 80 tts.
Find the distance of the defect from the end of the bar at which the ultrasonic
pulse enters.
V. a) i) What is Hall effect ? Explain how carrier concentration ofa semiconducting
material is determined experimentally.
ii) Write a note on Josephson effect in superconductors.

b) i) Discuss energy density of states in a conductor. Explain Fermi distribution
of electrons in energY states.
ii) A uniform silver wire has a resistivity of 1.54x10{ cm at room temperature.
