                        Answer ALL the Questions

1.     What is low temperature physics?  

2.     What are the disadvantages of cascade process?

3.     Define singular points.

4.     Give the important applications of photoelasticity.

5.     What are ultrasonic waves and what is its maximum wavelength?

6.     A quartz crystal of density 2650 Kg/m3 is vibrating at resonance. Calculate the velocity of longitudinal waves in the crystal. The elasticity of the crystals is 7.9 x 1010N/m2.

7.     What is the main function of Bucky grid in radiography system?

8.     Define the resolution of a NaI (Tl) detector system.

9.     What are Bravais lattices?

10.   Define coordination number. What are the coordination number in S.C.,B.C.C.,F.C.C and H.C.P

11.   (a) State the principle behind adiabatic demagnetization of paramagnetic material.
        (b) Discuss the method of adiabatic demagnetization for getting low temperature.

12.   (a) What is the refrigerator?
        (b) Give the basic requirements of a liquid to act as refrigerant.
        (c) Explain the principle of refrigeration with block diagram.    

13.   Explain photo elasticity and photo elastic method. Explain stress-optic law and obtain an expression for the same.
(or)
14.   Explain Quarter wave plate (QWP) and Half wave plate (HWP). Discuss about the determination of thickness of QWP and HWP for the positive and negative crystals.

15.   Discuss the magnetostriction method of producing ultrasonic waves. List the merits and demerits.

16.   Explain the measurement of blood pressure by ultrasonic Doppler shift blood pressure meter.

17.   What is Radiography? Explain the radiographic setup with a neat sketch. Discuss the merits and demerits.
(or)
18.   Explain in detail the working of scintillation detector system with a diagram.

19.   Calculate coordination number, atomic radius and packing density for a simple cubic and body centered cubic crystals.

20.   Show that the separation between lattice planes in a cubic crystal is  d(hkl) =1/ Ö (h2/k2+k2/b2+l2/c2).
