PART A (10 x 2 = 20 marks)

1.    List out the advantages of Fly-By-Wire control over the conventional mechanical Flight control system.

2.    What is meant by Active Control Technology and what is the need for ACT in FRW control?

3.    Why is gear type pump described as a positive displacement pump?

4.    Differentiate between hydraulic and pneumatic system.

5.    What is difference between defueling and jettison?

6.    Distinguish between fuel system of piston and jet engines.

7.    Differentiate super changer from turbo charger.

8.    What is anti-icing and de-icing?

9.    What effects do temperature changes have on fuels used and how are they compensated?

10.    Define TAS & EAS.


PART B (5 x 16 = 80 marks)

11.    (a) Explain how powered operated flight control system and power assisted  flight control system works.    (8)

Or

(b) Write short notes on (i) ILS and (ii) Auto pilot system.    (8)

12.    (a) Explain with neat sketch and working principle of hydraulic landing gear retraction system. (16)

Or

(b) (i) What are the various components of Pneumatic system? Explain with neat sketches any one of them.                                                                                                                                                         (8)

(ii) Describe Expander tube brake system with a neat sketch.    (8)

13.    (a) Explain the starting system of an aircraft. List out the gas turbine engine starters with neat sketch.                                                                                                                                                          (16)

(b) Discuss, in details the fuel-systems used for piston and jerreng'mes. '

14.    (a) Explain with neat sketches vapour cycle cooling system of an aircraft.

Or

(b) Classify different type of oxygen system. Explain solid state oxygen systems and list out its advantages.

15. (a) Define the term Mach number and describe how it is indicated by measurement of pilot and static pressures in a Machmeter.

Or

(b) (i) Explain how gyroscopes help in establishing directional references in the aircraft.

(ii) List out the various gyroscopic instruments used in the aircraft and explain any one in detail.
