The following question refers to Anna University Question paper for second semester B.E degree examination conducted in the year 2010.

PART A (10X2=20 MARKS)
1. State the principles of surveying?
2. How are bricks classified?
3. Describe bearing capacity of soil.
4. Describe stress and strain.
5. What is the use of surge tank in hydro power plants?
6. Provide 2 examples for positive displacement pumps.
7. What is the function of carburetor?
8. Compare 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines with regard to power output and thermal efficiency, for the identical speed and cylinder capacity.
9. Describe ton of refrigeration.
10. State the values of DBT and RH for human comfort in India.

PART B-(5 X 16=80)
11. The subsequent perpendicular offsets were taken at 10m intervals from a survey line to an
irregular boundary line: 3.15m, 4.30m, 8.20m, 6.85m, 7.60m, 4.20m, 5.60m, 4.30m. compute the area enclosed ranging from the survey line, irregular boundary line, 1st and last
offsets by trapezoidal rule.

12. Elaborate the various kinds of cement? Discuss their properties and uses.

ii) Pile foundation.

17. Discuss the working of a 2 stroke petrol engine. elaborate the advantages and disadvantages of 2 stroke engines?

18. Discuss the principle of working of a 4 stroke diesel engine with suitable sketches. What are the merits and demerits of 4 stroke engines?
19. With the help of flow diagram discuss the principle of working of a vapour compression refrigeration system. Compare vapour absorption refrigeration with vapour compression
refrigeration.

20. With a neat sketch, discuss in detail the working of a window kind room air conditioner.
