Answer all questions
PART A-10X2=20marks

1. What is the structural action of
(a) Heel and
(b) Toe of a cantilever retaining wall

2. Why counter forts are provide in a counter forts retaining wall.

3. Why cover domes for a circular water tank is economical than a flat cover slab.

4. Why bracing are provided in the stagings of a water tank?

5. When a mat found action is restored to a structure?

6. What are the advantages of box culvert over slab culvert?

Part B- 5x16=80 marks
11.(a) Design a cantilever retaining wall to retain 5m of horizontal backfill.
The density of the soil is 17Kn / m2
Safe baring capacity of the soil=165 Kn / m2
Angel of internal friction of soil=250
The coefficient of friction between base slab and concrete=0.55
Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel.
(or)
(b)(i) What are the design principle involved in the different components of a counter fort retaining wall.
(ii) Write down the steps involved in the design of counter fort retaining wall.

12.(a) Design and underground water tank 4m x10mx 3m deep. The sub soil consist of sand having angel of repose of 30 degree and saturated unit weight of 17Kn / m3 . The water table is likely to rise up to ground level. Use M20 concrete and HYST bars. Take unit weight of water as 9.81kn/m3 .
(or)

(b)A square elevated water tank 3m is open at top. Base of wall may be assumed as hinged. Use M25 concrete and Fe415steel. Design the wall along the horizontal direction.

13.(a) An intermediate flight of a staircase is support at only at the edge of landing (support-perpendicular to the direction of the flight). Height between landing is 1.5m. The flight has steps consist of 10 risers (each rise=150mm) and 9 treats (each treat=250mm). The steps are support on a waist slab. Landing is 1m width. Support width is 300mm each. Design the waist slab and loading for bending moment along. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Live load on stair is 3.0kn/m2  width of flight=1.5m.
(or)
(b)Design the R.C. wall 3m height, 4m width and 100mm thick to carry a factored load of 600kn/m using M 20 concrete and Fe415 steel.

14.(a) Design a rectangular slab 4mx6m which is simply support at the all the four edge at subjected to a services live load of 4 kn/m2. Assume µ=0.5, fck=20N/mm2, fy=415N/mm2.
(or)
(b)Consider a rectangular slab of 4m x 3m with one of its longer side free and other three side are simply supported. The reinforcement in the two perpendicular direction are such that Mx=10kn/m, My=15kn/m. Find the collapse load.

15.(a) Determine the allowable axial load on column 300mm x 60mm constructed in first class brick work in CM 1:6 using modular bricks 200mm x 10mm x 100mm the height of pier between the footing and top of slab is 5.2m. The strength of unit may be assumed as 10.5MPa.
(or)
(b)Write short notes on:
(i) Classification of walls.
(ii) Effective of length and effective height of walls.
(iii) Permissible stress in brick masonry.
