How to understand the difference between free vibration and forced vibration?

Are you confused about the two terms 'free vibration' and 'forced vibration' ? In this article, you will acquire the knowledge of basic concepts about vibration and the difference between the free and forced vibration. Read on to learn more details.

What is vibration?

Before going to deep discussion, you must know first the basic definition of what is vibration? how it occurs? What is the need for it. Let's go on. Vibration is nothing but the behavior of bodies under the influence of oscillatory forces which may occur frequently by dynamically unbalanced masses in case of rotating machines or even by the motion of the body itself. So simply vibration occurs due to external or internal forces on a body. Then what is the need. Vibratory motions will be useful in many applications like musical instruments, etc.

The difference between free vibration and forced vibration

As the name indicates, free vibration also termed as natural vibration is defined as the vibration which occurs and free from any external forces. However, it will need an initial disturbance to start vibration. For example, consider a simple pendulum. This pendulum will only vibrate if you touch it and oscillate it. So your touch is a force which is no longer needed to vibrate the pendulum freely. Hence, from this concept, you can understand the free vibration which is free from any external forces.

Similarly, forced vibration is subjected to a continuous force due to which the given body vibrates. For example, consider a machine like drilling machine or shaping machine or lathe in mechanical workshop. These machines will experience some vibrations in their part or parts. Say, drilling machine in which the drill can vibrate slightly. This vibration is due to the external forces, that is electrical power given to the machine. So this force can be stopped for the work is being done. Hence the vibration occurs in these type of cases, is termed as forced vibration.

Classification of free vibration

Now, understand some basic concepts in free vibration. Let us learn the classification of free vibration. They are:
1. Longitudinal Vibration
2. Transverse Vibration
3. Torsional Vibration
