(section - A )

1. Why do transition elements exhibit variable oxidation state ? Explain giving various oxidation states exhibited by first row transition elements (Marks - 6.5)

2. Explain the following :-
(i) Colour of transition metal compounds .
(ii) Melting point of chromium is the highest among the 3D metals .
(iii) Cro is basic , CR2O3 amphoteric and CRO3 is acidic. (Marks -2+2+2.5)

( Section -B )

3. Give the iupac names , the oxidation number of the central metals, atoms and the number of unpaired electrons in the following -

(i) [cr(nh3)4cl2] (ii) na3[co(no2)6] (iii) [ni(co)4].  (marks -2+2+2.5)

4. Discuss the valence bond theory for complex compounds. How Does this theory explain the geometry and magnetic properties of these compounds ? What are the limitations of this theory ?  (Marks - 6.5)

5. (a) What are lanthanides ? Why were they names as 'rare earths' ?

(b) on the basis of electronic configuration of lanthanides explain the anomalous oxidation states exhibited by some of them. (Marks - 3+3.5)

6. Discuss the oxidation states and the electronic configuration of  Actinides. (Marks - 6.5)

7. What is redox potential ? On the basis of redox potential compare the Relative strength of oxidizing and reducing agents. (Marks - 6.5)

8. Write a note on redox system in water . (Marks -6.5)

( Section - E)

9. What is lewis acid-base concept ? Give classification of acids and bases according to lewis theory (Marks -7)

10. What is meant by non-aqueous solvents ? Describe important types of Reactions taking place in liquid ammonia as a solvent . (Marks - 7 )
