Important 16 Marks Questions with answers (All five units) are listed for CE6008 Groundwater Engineering Subject

1. Explain about Groundwater Investigation

2. During Hydro geological investigation two potential aquifers 32 km apart , were located ,one being 5000 years and the other 25000years old. They were found to be connected by a water bearing stratum of 30m thickness running inclined at 20m/km. From a few observation wells, the hydraulic gradient was found to be 0.2m/km. Determine the transmissibility of the water bearing stratum.

3. i) During Groundwater Investigation in the Cauvery basin the following data were collected. (6)
Recharge area identified - 19 x 13 km
Annual Rainfall - 1070mm
Infiltration - 20% of rainfall
Transmissibility of aquifer- 6 x 10^6 lpd/m
Width of aquifer -21 km
Hydraulic gradient -1.14 m/km
It has to be ascertained whether all the pumpage comes from the recharge area.(6)

5. i) Explain about Groundwater development potential in India. (12)
ii) Write the groundwater balance equation. (4)

6. A 30 cm well penetrates 50 m below static water table. After a long period of pumping at a rate of 1800 lpm , the drawdown in the well at 15 m and 45 m from the pumped well where 1.7 and 0.8 m respectively. Determine transmissibility of the aquifer. What is the draw down ?

9. An unconfined aquifer with a specific yield of 0.20 is used to supply water for the irrigation of farm land. The recharge area of the aquifer is same as the irrigated area. The recharge is limited to 76 mm per year. The saturated thickness of the aquifer -is 15.2 m. How many years will the water supply
last if 254 mm of water per year is pumped from the aquifer for irrigation?

10. A 60 cm well is being pumped at a rate of 1360 litres per minute. At a distance of 6 m from the well being pumped, the draw down was 6m and at 15 m the draw down was 1.5 m. The bottom of the well is 90 m below the groundwater table,(a) Find out K, (b)lf all the observed points were on the
Dupuit's curve, what was the draw down in the well during pumping.? What is the specific capacity of the well? What is the rate at which water can be drawn from this well?
