( Solid State Physics, Solid State Devices and Electronics)
Time : Three Hours] [Maximum Marks : 50
Note : Attempt one full question from each Unit. All questions carry equal marks.


1. Write and explain the expression for the cohesive energy of solids and hence derive the equation for Madelung constant.

(a) Derive an expression for specific heat of solids with the help of Dulong-Petit Law.
(b) Write three main differences between Einstein and Debye's theories.


2. Derive and explain the various results obtained by solving schrodinger equation for uniform potential according to sommerfeld's free electron model.


For a ferromagnetic substance explain coercivity, retentivity and hysteresis loss using B-H curve. Hence prove that for unit volume of a substance hysteresis loss in each curve is equal to the area of B-H loop.

3. Explain the characteristic curves of a transistor in common emitter mode giving the necessary electrical circuits.


Write short notes on any two of the following :

(i) Zener breakdown
(ii)Light Emitting Diode (LED)
(iii) Depletion layer


4. Give the necessary electrical circuit and explain the working of Bridge rectifier, hence derive an expression for its ripple factor.

What do you mean by filter circuit ? Explain the role of inductors and capacitors in a filter circuit.


5. Write short notes on any two of the following :
(i) Multiprogramming systems
(ii) Word processing package
(iii) M. S. Word

Write a flowchart and a C-programme for solving a simultaneous equation.
