B. Sc. (Part III) EXAMINATION, 2010
PHYSICS
Paper First
(Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics)

Time : Three Hours ] [ Maximum Marks : 50

Note : Attempt one question from each Unit. All questions carry equal marks.

UNIT-I

1. (a) Explain inertial and non-inertial frames of reference.

(b) Prove that in two inertial frames of reference which are connected through Galileon transformation, the law of conservation of energy remains invariant.

OR

(a) For relativistic velocities explain the phenomenon of length contraction and also derive an expression for it.

(b) A clock shows correct time. What should be its velocity with respect to a static observer, so that it seems to be 30 seconds late in a day to him?

UNIT-2

2. (a) Describe Davisson-Germer experiment to prove the existence of matter waves.

(b) Prove that an electron having mass m and kinetic energy k produces a matter wave of wavelength ? = h/v2mk.

OR

(a) Describe the process of formation of wave packet.
(b) Explain teh wave velocity and group velocity and find relation between them.

UNIT-3

3. Write short notes on the following :

(a) Basic Postulates of Quantum Mechanics.
(b) Role of operators in Quantum Mechanics.

OR

Solve the radial part of Schrodinger equation for Hydrogen atom and also determine the maximum probable distance of electron from the nucleus of hydrogen.

UNIT-4

4. Discuss the spectra of alkali metals and explain the fine structure of sodium D lines.

OR

Describe the molecular spectra and its discrete energy levels on the basis of the following points :
(i) Electromagnetic Field
(ii) Quantization
(iii)Transition rules

UNIT-5

5. Explain a-decay with the help of Gamow theory.

OR

(a) Discuss the fundamental nature of nuclear forces on the basis of p-p and n-n scattering.

(b) Give an account of the interaction that takes place between energetic charged and uncharged particles with matter. What are the applications of this interaction ?
