11.   Read the text given below and answer the questions that follow:

FLICKER
                Walter examined hundreds of people who had any kind of fit attack and found that about one in every twenty responded to carefully adjusted flicker. They experienced ‘strange feelings’ or faintness or swimming in the read; some became unconscious for a few moments or their limbs jerked in rhythm with the light. As soon as any such sensation was reported, the flicker was turned off to prevent a complete convulsion. In other subjects, the flicker has to be exactly matched with the brain rhythm to produce any effects. A feedback circuit, in which the flashing light was actually fired by the brain signals themselves, produced immediate epileptic seizures in more than half the people tested.

        Driving down a tree-lined avenue with the sun flickering through the trunks at a certain rhythm can be very disturbing. There is a record of a cyclist who passed out on several occasions while traveling home down such an avenue. In his case the momentary unconsciousness stopped him from pedaling, so he slowed down to a speed at which the flicker no longer affected him and came round in time to save himself from falling. But a motor car has more momentum, and the chances are that it would keep going at the critical speed and influence the driver long enough to make him lose control altogether.

There is no way of knowing how many fatal crashes have occurred in this way.

        In another case, a man found that every time he went to the cinema he would suddenly find that he was consumed by an overwhelming desire to strangle the person sitting next to him. On one occasion he even came to his senses to discover that he had his hands clutched around his neighbour’s throat. When he was tested, it was found that he developed violent limb jerking when the flicker was set at twenty-four cycles per second, which is exactly the rhythm of film recorded at twenty-four frames a second.

        The implications of this discovery are enormous. Everyday we are exposed to flicker in some way and run the risk of illness or fatal fits. The flash rate of fluorescent lights at 100 to 120 per second is too high for convulsions, but knows what effect it may be having on those exposed to it for many hours each day?

12.   Read the following passage and make notes:
       
It is common knowledge that the root cause of our backwardness in most fields is illiteracy. Campaigns for the irradiations of this drawback gathered momentum in the past four decades after independence. The results are, as expected, dramatic. However, while the percentage of literacy in India is going up, the number of illiterates has also been increasing, which is really incredible. Thus, according to the 1991 census figures, there were 503 million illiterates in the country, 30 million more than in 1981. During the same period, the percentage of literacy went up from 34 to 39 percent. There is no need of any sophisticate technique to explain the cause of this paradox, as it is obviously the result of the rapid growth of population. The rapid growth of population has outpaced whatever little progress had been achieved in literacy. For instance, form 1971 to 1981, literacy increased at an annual average rate of 0.7%, while the country’s population grew by 2.15% every year. In the following decade the average rate of annual increase in literacy was 0.95%, whereas the population grew by almost 2.85% every during that decade. But population explosion is not entirely responsible for the growing number of illiterates. The apathy of most states in failing to tackle the problem of adult illiteracy is also partly to blame. Till now, they have shown little awareness of the magnitude of the problem. More over, follow up measures to prevent neo literates from relapsing into illiteracy are just as important as the initial adult literacy campaigns. In this case too the state education authority is negligent. Not sufficient provision has been made for “continued education”. This can be done by setting up more rural libraries, adult schools and correspondence courses.

14.   Read the given passage and draw a flowchart to represent the process of making paper.
                There are twelve major steps involved in the process of making paper. (i) Trees are harvested and the bark is removed from the logs in the barker. (ii) The logs are cut into small chips in the chipper. (iii) The chips from oatmeal- like pulp as they are cooked with water and chemicals in the digester (large pressure cooker). (iv) The pulp, under pressure, is blown out of the digester into a tank called a blow tank (v) The pulp is sent to washers where the cooking liquid, containing chemicals and impurities, is removed and the pulp washed with water. (vi) Bleach is mixed with the pulp to turn it white in the bleachers. (vii) The pulp is sent to a refiner which beats and roughs up the fibers. A large quantity of water is added to the pulp to form slurry. (viii) The slurry flows over a moving wire screen and called a Fourdrinier. As the fibers travel along the screen, water drains through and the fibers form a sheet. (ix) More water is pressed out of the sheet by a press roll. (x) The sheet is dried as it travels through dryer rolls. (xi) The sheet is ironed on the calendar rolls to give it a smooth finish. (xii) The sheet is rewound by a rewinder on to reels for shipping. These twelve steps give you an idea of how paper is made in a large scale process. In steps one and two, the wood is prepared for processing. Steps three through the paper. Step nine through twelve dry the paper it for shipping.
