11.(a)(i) Explain the internal and external characteristics of DC generator.
(ii) A 10kw 250v, DC shunt generator is driven at 1000rpm. Armature circuit resistance is 0.15 Ω and the field current is 1.64 A when the terminal voltage is 250V. Rotational losses are to be 540W. Find at rated load armature induced emf, developed torque and efficiency.

(b)(i) Explain the characteristics of DC shunt and serious motor.
(ii) A 250V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5Ω and a field resistance of 250Ω. When driving a constant load at 600rpm of the motor draws 21A. What will be the new speed of the motor if an additional 250Ω resistance is inserted in the field circuit?

12.(a)(i)A 20 KVA single phase transformer designed for 2000/200 V has the following constant: R1=2.5Ω,X1=8 Ω,R2=0.04 Ω and X2=0.07 Ω.Calculate the approximate value of the secondary terminal voltages and % regulation at full load and 0.8.p.f.  lagging When primary applied voltage is 2000V.
(ii) Find “all day”efficiency  of a transformer having maximum efficiency  of 98% at 15KVA at unity power factor and loaded as follow:
12 hours- 2kw at 0.5p.f lag
6 hours- 12kw at 0.8p.f lag
6 hours- at no load

(b)(i) Deduced the equivalent circuit of transformer.
(ii)A 1100/110V,22KVA single phase transformer has primary resistance and reactance 2 Ω and 5Ω respectively. The secondary resistance and reactance are  0.02Ω and 0.045Ω respectively. Calculate:
1. Equation resistance and reactance of secondary referred to primary.
2. Total resistance and reactance referred to primary.
3. Equation resistance and reactance of primary referred to secondary.
4. Total resistance and reactance referred to secondary.
5. Total copper loss.

13. (a)(i) Give the constructional details of rotor of both salient pole and cylindrical rotor synchronous machines.

11.(a) Design a V-belt drive and calculate the actual belt tensions and average stress for the following data. Power to be transmitted=7.5kw, Speed of deriving wheel = 1000rpm, Speed of deriving wheel = 300rpm, diameter of driven pulley=500mm, diameter of driven pulley=150mm and center distance=925mm.

(b)A 7.5kw electric motor running at 1400rpm is used to derive the input shaft of the gearbox of a machine. Design a suitable roller chain to connect the motor shaft to the gear box to given an exact speed radio 0f 10:1. The center to center  distances of the shaft to be approximately 600mm.

12.(a) Design a super gear drive to transmit 8kw at 720rpm and the radio is 2. The pinion and wheel are made of the surface hardened carbon steel with 55 RC and core hardness less than 350 BHN. Ultimate strength is 720N/mm2 and yield strength is 360N/mm2.

(b)Design helical gear drive to transmit the power of 14.7kw. Speed radio 6, pinion speed 1200rpm, helix angel is 250.Select suitable materials and design the gear.

13.(a) Design a pair of straight bevel gears for two shafts whose axis are at right angels. The power transmitted is 25kw. The speed of pinion is 300rpm and of a gear is 120rpm.

(b)Design a worm gear drive to transmit 22.5kw at a worm speed of 1440rpm. Velocity radio is 24:1. An efficiency of at least 85% is desired. The temperature raise should be restricted to 400 C. Determine the required cooling area.

14.(a) Design a nine speed gear box for a machine to provide speed ranging from 100rpm to 1500rpm. The input is from a motor of 5kw at 1440rpm. Assume any alloy steel for the gears.

(b) Design a 12 speed gear box for a lathe. The minimum and maximum speed are 100 to 1200rpm.Power is 5kw from 1440rpm induction motor.

15.(a) A power of 20kw is to be transmitted through a cone clutch at 500rpm. For uniform wear condition, find the main dimension of clutch and shaft. Also determine the axial force required to engage the clutch. Assume coefficient of friction as 0.25, the maximum normal pressure on the friction surface is not to exceed 0.08MPa and take the design stress for the shaft materials as 40MPa.

(b) Design a differentiate band brake for a winch lifting a load 20kn through a steel wire rope wound around a barrel of 600mm diameter. The break drams, keyed to the barrel shaft, 800mm diameter and the angel of the lap of the bond over the drams is about 2400. Operating arms of the break are 50mm and 250mm. The length of operating lever is 1.6m.

12.(a) Design and underground water tank 4m x10mx 3m deep. The sub soil consist of sand having angel of repose of 30 degree and saturated unit weight of 17Kn / m3 . The water table is likely to rise up to ground level. Use M20 concrete and HYST bars. Take unit weight of water as 9.81kn/m3 .

(b)A square elevated water tank 3m is open at top. Base of wall may be assumed as hinged. Use M25 concrete and Fe415steel. Design the wall along the horizontal direction.

13.(a) An intermediate flight of a staircase is support at only at the edge of landing (support-perpendicular to the direction of the flight). Height between landing is 1.5m. The flight has steps consist of 10 risers (each rise=150mm) and 9 treats (each treat=250mm). The steps are support on a waist slab. Landing is 1m width. Support width is 300mm each. Design the waist slab and loading for bending moment along. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Live load on stair is 3.0kn/m2  width of flight=1.5m.

(b)Design the R.C. wall 3m height, 4m width and 100mm thick to carry a factored load of 600kn/m using M 20 concrete and Fe415 steel.

11.(a) Draw E-R diagram for the restaurant menu ordering system which will facilitate the food items ordering and services within a restaurant. The entire restaurant scenario is detail as follow. The customer is able to view to food items menu, call the waiter, place order and obtain the final bill through the computer kept in their table. The waiter through their wireless tablet PC are able to initialize a table for customer, control the table function to assist customer, orders, sent order to food preparation staff (chef) and finalize the customer bill. The food preparation staff (chef), with their touch display interfaces to the system,are able to view orders to sent the kitchen by waiter. During preparation they are able to let the waiter know the status of each items are completed. The system should have full accountability and logging facilities and should support supervisors action to account for exceptional circumstances, such as a meal being refunded or walked out on.

11.(a) A steel rod of diameter at 32mm and length 500mm is placed inside an aluminium tube of internal diameter 35mm and external diameter 45mm which is 1mm longer than the steel rod. A load of 300 KN is placed on the assembly through the rigid collar. Find the stress induoed in steel rod and aluminium tube. Take the modulus of elasticity of steel as 200 GPa and that of aluminium as 80GPa.s
(or)

(b)At a point in a stained material the resultant intensity of stresses across a vertical plane is 100MP a tensile inclined at350 clockwise to its normal. The normal component of intensity of stress across the horizontal plane is 50MPa compressive. Determine graphically using Mohr’s circle method:
(i)The position of principal planes and stress across them and
(ii) The normal and tangential stress across a plane which is 600 clockwise to the vertical plane.

12.(a)An overhanging beam ABC of length 7m is simply supported at A and B over a span of 5m and the portion BC overhangs by 2m. Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagram and determine the point of contra flexure if it is subjected to uniformly distributed loads of 3KN/m over the portion AB and a concentrated load of 8KN at C.

(b)Three beam have a same length, the same allowable stress and the same bending moment. The cross section of the beam are a square, a rectangle depth twice the width and a circular. Find the radios of weight of the circular and the rectangular beams with respect to square beam.

13(a)A brass tube of external diameter 80mm  and internal diameter 50mm is closely fitted to a steel rod of 50mm diameter to from a composite shaft. If a torque of 10KNm is to be resisted by this shaft find the maximum stresses developed in each material and the angel of twist in 2m length. Take  modualus of rigidity of brass and steel as40x103 N/mm2 and 80x 103 N/mm2 respectively.

(b)A close-coiled helical spring is to have a stiffness of 900N/m in compression, with a maximum load of 45N and a maximum shearing stress of 120N/mm2. The solid length of the spring (i. e . ,coils touching) is 45mm. Find:
(i)The wire diameter
(ii) The mean coil radius
(iii)The number of coils. Take modulus of rigidity of the material of the spring as 0.4x105 N/mm2.

14.(a) A horizontal beam of uniform section and 7m long is simply supported at its  end. The beam is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 6KN/m over a length of 3m from the leaf end and a concentrated load 12KN at 5m from the left end. Find the maximum deflection in the beam using Macaulay’s method.

(b) A cantilever of span 4m carries a uniformly distributed load of 4KN/m over a length of 2m from the fixed end and a concentrated load of 10KN at the free end. Determine the slope and deflection of the cantilever at the free end using conjugate beam method. Assume El is uniform throughout.

15.(a)A thin cylindrical shell 2.5m long has 700mm internal diameter and 8mm thickness if the shell is subjected to an internal pressure of 1MPa find
(i)The hool and longitudinal stresses developed
(ii)Maximum shear stress induces and
(iii) The changes in diameter length and volume. Take modulus of elasticity of the wall material as 200GPs and Poisson’s radio as 0.3.

(b)A thick cylinder with external diameter 320mm and internal diameter 160mm is subjected to an internal pressure of 8 N/mm2. Draw the variation of radial and hoop stresses in the cylinder wall. Also determine the maximum shear stress in the cylinder wall.

(ii) A population consists of five number 2,3,6,8,11. Consist all possible sample  of size to which can be drawn with replacement from this population. Find the mean of the sampling distribution of means , the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of means.

(b)(i)Suppose  that the heights of 100 male students at XYZ university represented a random sample of the highest of all male student at the university. Find (1)95% (2)99% confidents intervals for estimating the means height of the XYZ university students.

(ii)A sample of five measurement of a diameter of a sphere were record by a scientist as 6.33,6.37, 6.36 , 6.32 and 6.37 cm. Determine unbiased and efficient estimates of 1 the true mean (2) the turn variance. Assume that the measured diameter is normally distributed.

13.(a) The average number of defective articles in a certain factory is claimed to be less than the average for all the factories. The average for all the factories is 30.5. A random sample of  100 defective articles showed the following distribution.
